WHAT IS FGM?
FGM = Female genital mutilation or female circumcision is a cultural practice that affects thousands of girls and women around the world. It is a cultural practice that has nothing to do with religion.
According to the WHO (World Health Organization) identifies 3 main types of FGM:
⇒ Type I — Partial or total removal of the clitoris and/or the prepuce (clitoridectomy).
⇒ Type II — Partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without excision of the labia majora (excision).
⇒ Type III — Narrowing of the vaginal orifice with creation of a covering seal by cutting and appositioning the labia minora and/or the labia majora, with or without excision of the clitoris (infibulation).
WHAT TOOLS ARE USED FOR FGM?
To make the cut: any sharp objects – pieces of glass, scissors, knifes, razor blades, forceps
Types of Needles: domestic sewing needle, round or sharp objects, regular surgical needles
To suture: regular surgical thread, sewing thread, vegetable or nylon fiber
